Obituary

George (Bucky) Oscar Herbst passed away unexpectedly at the West Palm Beach VA on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at the age of 90. George O. was born on February 11, 1933, to George L. and Clara E. Herbst in Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia Ann Herbst; his parents, George and Clara Herbst; and sisters, Violet (Evans) Storvick and Lois (Glen) Geisinger.

The family lived with his grandfather, George A., in a home attached to a railroad car in the Camden Neighborhood. His best friend was his dog, Pepper. They moved to Columbia Heights when he was 16. He graduated from Columbia Heights High School in 1953. That is where he met and later married, Patricia, his wife of 67 years. Together, they raised five children in their Columbia Heights home. His career included the United States Army, Soo Line Railroad, Milkman, Montgomery  Ward, and licensed insurance agent. He often worked 2-3 jobs to support his growing family. He then began driving a truck for McLean Trucking as a member of the Teamsters for more than 20 years. After retiring, George bought a farm in Lawler, where he enjoyed his tractors, trailers, and big trucks, baling hay, and “tinkering” in the shed.

George loved the great outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting, farming, and snowmobiling. He also had a pilot's license and enjoyed spending time with his family, visiting neighbors, and playing cards. He was an avid reader of Westerns, Mysteries, and Financial News. He and Patrica retired at their lake home on Big Sandy and were snowbirds in West Palm Beach.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandpa. Celebrating his memory are his children: Michael Herbst, Michelle (David) Benson, Violet (Craig) Larson, Theresa (Andy) Tihanyi, and Vanessa Herbst ( George Larson). Also, his grandchildren: Christopher, Michael, Stephanie, Richard (Elizabeth), Melissa, Derek, Tara (John), and Dalton. Also, his great-grandchildren William, Ethan, Scarlett, and Katalaya-Mae. He is also, celebrated by his in-laws Elizabeth (Jerry) Kraus and Gerald (Sharon) Peterson, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 3rd at Round Lake Presbyterian Church in McGregor, MN. Visitation: 11 am, Service: Noon, with a luncheon immediately following the service. A private interment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN, for his final resting place, alongside his wife, Patricia.
