Leo John Chartrand

Leo John Chartrand, age 95, of Centuria, WI passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN.

Leo was born on July 8, 1922 in Mont Laurier, Quebec, Canada to Paul Emile Chartrand and Marie Laure (L’Allier) Chartrand.  His family moved to the United States in 1925 settling on a farm in the Georgetown area east of Balsam Lake.  He attended Blake School.  After serviing the US Army he went to vocational school for carpentry under the GI Bill.

On August 31, 1946 he married Marian E. Swenson from Almelund, MN.  They raised two daughters, Shirley and Susan.  He worked as a carpenter and in 1956 bought a farm near Centuria, WI where he built a new home for his family that he lived in until the time of his death.  The summer before he died he was still mowing his yard.

Leo was a member of the Fristad Lutheran Church in Centuria, WI where he served on the Board of Trustees, participated in the Merry Mates couples group with his wife, Marian, and built the cross that hangs above the altar.

He and his brother, Richard, worked together for many years in the home construction business.

Leo enjoyed fishing (often in Canada), deer hunting, snowmobiling with the Centuria snowmobile club, cabin time with his family, playing cards and pool, motorcycling, traveling throughout the US, Canada and a trip to Europe and Mexico.  He especially liked to be with family working on projects and tinkering in his shop.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marian of 52 years (died 1999), brothers: Oscar and Emil Chartrand, sisters: Lauraine Backes, Andree Backes, Rose Waterman and Marie Rose Chartrand.

He is survived by his daughter, Shirley (Charles Stewart) Chartrand and Susan (James) Wonka, grandchildren: Terri (Troy) Schmit, Todd (Michaela Van Heel) Wonka, great grandchildren: Brennen Wonka, Eve Schmit and Kyle Schmit, dear friend Leota Schwanz, brothers, Richard (Sandi) Chartrand, Roger (Judy) Chartrand and sister, Jacqueline (Arnold) Stoeberl, many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at the Fristad Lutheran Church in Centuria.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M.   Please join the family for lunch and continued fellowship following the service.

A private immediate family interment will take place at a later date.

The Kolstad Family Funeral Home of Centuria has been entrusted with arrangements.
